History in Da Rock

CV9A2467

Juneteenth in Da Rock is unique because it takes place in the very footprint of the city’s early celebrations, dating back to the 1880s. These early celebrations were known as Freedom Day and Emancipation Day, and were closely tied to the Mosaic Templars of America, an organization central to the city’s African American history.

Emancipation Day celebrations, some of the first recorded Juneteenth observances in Arkansas, occurred in Little Rock and other cities like Texarkana, Pine Bluff, and Helena in the 1880s. These celebrations were filled with picnics, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, music, games, and cake walks. They were often hosted by local churches, colleges, and community organizations.

The Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, named after the Mosaic Templars of America, proudly honors this rich history. We are committed to continuing the tradition of reflection and community, bringing together residents to celebrate our shared past while working toward a brighter future.

Juneteenth in Da Rock 2025 offers a powerful opportunity to honor and remember Little Rock’s early Juneteenth celebrations, rooted in freedom and community, as we move forward in unity and strength.

IT WAS WRITTEN IN THE STARS is a road map to freedom and Afro-Futures, these pieces will document origin stories, how folks crossed over geographical bodies, and where the people of The Diaspora have yet to go by recognizing Black bodies as constellations in the sky.
